Herts Young Homeless Group
Brief History

Herts Young Homeless Group
(HYHG) was originally known as ‘Crouchfield Young Homeless Project’. Founded in 1993, it was funded by the Crouchfield Trust using money from a fund set up from the sale of a Local Authority school. At this time there was only one paid member of staff.

In 1995, four ‘Homeless Development Teams’ were set up across the county and there were now four paid members of staff.

In 1997, a fifth ‘Homeless Development Team’ was set up, along with HHAH! The organisation now had six paid members of staff, and moved their Central Office into Breaks Manor, Hatfield.

A new charitable company, called ‘Herts Young Homeless Group’, was founded in 1998, with six countywide projects plus HHAH! There were now ten paid members of staff.

In the year 2000 a new Director was appointed, Sue Frost, who is the organisation’s current Chief Executive. The organisation had 17 paid members of staff at this time.

In 2002 it was decided to reorganise/restructure the organisation into four regional projects – North, West, South and East. HHAH! was still going strong, and overall there were 25 paid members of staff.

In 2003 a new project, ‘Crashpad Mediation Project ’, was set up to meet the immediate problem of 16 and 17 year olds being homeless. HYHG employed 32 paid staff at this time.

In 2004, the Central Offices moved to York House, Old Hatfield, as the organisation had now outgrown the premises at Breaks Manor. HYHG currently has 50 paid members of staff, with more being recruited as and when funding is available.
