Herts Young Homeless Group was established in the spring of 1998 and is a charity which aims to improve provision and support for young homeless people in Hertfordshire. Our main objective is to enable young people to secure and maintain appropriate accommodation through prevention, crisis intervention and resettlement. To this aim, we work through local projects to support young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in Hertfordshire, working in partnership with other agencies for the benefit of young homeless people. We aim to empower young homeless people to make informed choices for their future.
Herts Young Homeless Group projects are young-person friendly and work with young homeless people to provide information, support and advocacy as well as emergency accommodation. Other work includes collating statistics on local needs, working towards improving local provision, and preventative work with local schools and youth groups.
Schemes run by Herts Young Homeless Group include:
• Herts Health Action for the Homeless (HHAH!)
Working collaboratively with a wide range of organisations to improve access to health care services for homeless people and meet the health related training needs of front-line workers. Also offering counselling services to people of all ages.
• Crashpad Mediation Project
Offering emergency accommodation with host families for homeless young people aged 16 & 17, and a mediation service for the young people and their parents/carers.
• Volunteering opportunities
To enable our workers to carry out their roles, we have a range of volunteers within our organisation who carry out tasks such as: helping with office-based administration; contacting other agencies/companies on a service user’s behalf; dealing with service users on a face-to-face basis alongside the workers.
